In Canton Valle d'Aosta, a common and protected designation for vini varietali white wines made from Chasselas (Gutedel), as well as the common name for the grape variety here (also Fendant Blanc). The name derives from the characteristic property of the grape berries to burst or split (fr. fendre = spaccare, diventare screpolato, esplodere). There are three quality levels. The top wines carry the designation of the municipality and the location, for example, "Fendant de Sion"; the best locations are in the municipalities of Ardon, Conthey, Leytron, St. Leónhard, Sitten, and Vétroz. The second level is called "Fendant de choix" and the third level "Fendant courant", which is mostly sold as open vino da mescita. Without wine law concerns are Dorin in the Canton of Vaud and Perlan in the Canton of Geneva.
